Global Healing offers an elective for third year Pediatric residents at the Roatan Volunteer Pediatric Clinic located at the Roatan Public Hospital in Coxen Hole, Roatan Island, Honduras.
Roatan is one of the Bay Islands off the Caribbean coast of Honduras. A majority of the over 65,000 residents live in poverty. Although English is spoken on the island, most of the Clinic patients speak only Spanish.
The clinic is staffed by a board-certified/eligible pediatrician, a third year pediatric resident, a local physician, and an intern who is usually a college student. Over 13,000 clinic visits have been recorded in the past 4 years. In addition, to seeing patients in the Clinic, residents examine newborns, participate in Ward rounds with local physicians and provide health maintenance to the children in a Day Care. Residents also participate in organizing and presenting a weekly case-based conference for all the doctors in the Hospital.
Work in the Clinic provides the opportunity to hone clinical skills in an environment with limited resources and technical services. The participant will have the chance to see and treat a spectrum of conditions such as malaria, dengue, malnutrition, and gastrointestinal parasites that are not usually seen in their training program.
Requirements: At least two years of Pediatric residency training. Basic communication skills in Spanish. Minimum rotation of one month.
Global Healing provides housing and medical evacuation insurance. The resident is responsible for transportation costs, food and incidental expenses.
